Nov 7th, 2013 - Leaving on a jet plane!

Our beautiful and generous friend Shirley picked up our giant box (which contains Ryan's bike and is big enough to fit 2 bodies) from Emi & Kevin's house, then trekked downtown to take us to YVR.  Dropped us off with promises to come home in no more than a year... or else.

We fly to LAX, but not before having to re-sort our luggage due to weight restrictions.  It's not that we didn't want to pay, it's that the box itself couldn't be over a certain weight so we moved some items around.  All worked out good but we were glad we got to the airport early.  All in all, Ryan had to pay $283 for his bike which is pretty much what we expected.  And thanks to Marlon for the bike box!
Flight to LAX was smooth and uneventful.

After waiting 5 hours with bad food (MSG laden Panda Express) and bad service (Drink LA) at LAX, we boarded Fiji Air in a Jumbo double Decker plane.
Best flight for sleeping, asked for the last row which scored us our own 2-seater row allowing us to guiltlessly recline our seats for our flight.  We felt pretty excited once getting on the plane as they had tropical island music playing and the attendants were all wearing casual Island style dresses (ladies) and short sleeve button Island shirts (men).
All the flight attendants were super friendly and we quite enjoyed the food as well...we got so much of it:
- Chicken curry rice
- Triple chocolate brownie
- Fun size twix
- Bun, crackers
- Crab salad
- Fruit salad
- Hot Egg and cheese sandwich
- Coffee (so good , not sure why)

As we were flying I kept thinking about the forgetfulness of trying to remember everything.   It took a lot (of our brain) to put this trip in motion and now that it's here...i just hope we haven't forgotten anything.  S'all good!

Just a few comments from this leg so far:
- There were 2 (very loud) Australian couples (got married in Vegas) who didn't realize they weren't the only people both on the plane and in the airports. Yelling to each other about 10 rows apart; made like they had swollen feet on the plane and when the doc came by she smiled and said "oh I'm fine."  ... made a scene in Fiji airport because they tried to bring liquids through security.  Duh... then Bad-mouthed Fiji.
- There was an amazing smell when we got off the plane in Fiji that let's you know you're on holiday.
- A band of merry men were playing and singing as we entered the airport.
- Had our first Fijian coffee experience at the airport waiting for our flight to Auckland.   Asked for a coffee with milk, and the lady said "Flat White"?
I said,  "Ok, a small Flat White".  (Whatever that is...)
Tasted good, like a mild cappuccino with lots of creamy froth. :)
- I've since learned that a Flat White is like a latte with less foam.
- People watching at the airport is so fascinating.
- People in Fiji seem to move a lot slower...even walking.

On our 3hr flight to Auckland on Fiji Air,  we received a hot chicken and cheese burger with juice, and arrowroot type cookies but thicker.  We also had coffee followed by
ice cream on a stick.   All free!  :)  Our travel journey was pretty painless if you ask me and I seem to be getting over my issue of sleeping on planes.  I slept most of the time.  Yay for me!  :)

You'll notice the next post is Nov 9th.  We miss a day with the time difference of 21 hours.

  1. Yeah, coffee in the southern hemisphere is ordered differently. I remember getting a 'white' coffee in Australia thinking it was coffee with milk, but it turns out to be a cappuccino.
